Ayurveda is the traditional medical system of India. Ayurveda means “the science of life” and has developed over thousands of years in conjunction with its “sister science” of Yoga, the science of mind. These highly refined sciences of body, mind and spirit represent a truly comprehensive healthcare system. Ayurvedic healthcare involves counseling in diet and lifestyle, physical and mental exercise (yoga, relaxation and meditation), herbal remedies and various cleansing and balancing treatments that utilize an extensive pharmacopeia and clinical repertoire.

Ayurveda is based upon the ancient philosophy of the Five Great Elements: Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Everything in the universe is a unique mixture of these primary states of matter. Ayurveda further distills the Five Elements into three primary biological forces called doshas. A person’s unique mixture of the Five Elements determines his/her constitution and is described in terms of the three doshas. The three doshas are Vata (predominantly the qualities of space and air); Pitta (predominantly the qualities of fire and water); and Kapha (predominantly the qualities of water and earth). Through the initial intake process of the first office visit, a person’s constitution is determined, establishing the context of the patient and their health concerns. It is used as a primary factor in diagnosis and the formation and execution of a treatment plan.

The emphasis in Ayurveda for optimal health is on living in harmony with the universal and timeless laws of Nature. Each individual is recognized as a microcosm (miniature replica) of the macrocosm (universe) and is therefore governed by and absolutely linked together by the same fundamental forces of Nature. When we synchronize ourselves with these forces we can naturally enjoy optimal health.  Disease is viewed as a result of disharmony between the individual and the environment, and expresses itself in uniquely individual ways. To restore and maintain optimal health, an individually prescribed treatment plan addresses the unique causes and manifestations of disease, providing each person with practical ways to restore harmony with Nature. This approach involves making personal changes in diet and lifestyle which are sometimes quite simple, often challenging, but never impossible. A gentle and gradual approach, individually customized, optimizes outcome for each unique person.
